On the Israel — Iran conflict and the European Federal Union

Like everyone on this planet, I am watching the devastating developments with the conflict between Israel and Iran. I totally understand how complicated the whole issue is. Still, killing people has never been an acceptable solution. This war — like any war — has to stop. To stop immediately.

I was asking myself how things could have been different in case the vision of the European Federal Union had already come true. Here’s my view

  • The European Federal Union, as a superpower of morality and ethics, should abide by the UN Security Council resolutions. Which means that the only solution is the one of the Two States, both independent, sovereign and democratic. Pretty much as agreed in the past between the late leaders Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat.
  • A very personal opinion: What we currently see is an extreme polarization. Islamo-fascist regimes in many of the region countries (Iran and beyond), but also an extreme right turn in the Israeli government. Many Israelis blame their PM for ultra-right, even neo-nazi tactics. Annihilating Gaza cannot be excused, nor forgiven, even if this area is the base (and shelter) of the horrible Hamas terrorists. Tens of thousands of victims simply cannot be justified. Both the jewish and the arab people deserve a better life.
  • Last but not least, we can’t have double standards: Russia/Ukraine. Israel/Palestine and Israel/Iran. And, of course, Turkey/Cyprus. International law should be the compass for addressing these geopolitical questions and, a superpower like the European Federal Union will have the means to make sure that the international law will indeed be applied without exceptions.
  • And, of course, the ICJ and the ICC in The Hague will have a lot of work to do in all these cases, like they effectively did in the case of the former Yugoslavia.

Once again, I totally understand how complex the matter is. I happen to have many Palestinian friends and equally many Israeli ones. All these friendships are a blessing to me. What happens, then, is just so horrible on a personal level.

I really think that this conflict, the Israel-Iran in particular and the Middle East question in general, it is a great opportunity for a new European leadership, to bring forward humanistic values and to get over the idea of annihilating one’s ‘bad neighbor’.

The creation of the European Federal Union will be good news for the whole World. That includes Israel, Iran and All of the Middle East.

Let’s just make it happen.
