From Trump to Biden and why we should All stay worried
Since yesterday millions of people around the World celebrate the apparent victory of Joe Biden over President Donald Trump. Clearly, relief is the world that describes the feeling of most of this people.
I admit I am relieved, too. God knows how Mr. Trump would behave in case he was re-elected, after all this unprecedented polarization. Good news then, for sure. But let’s be honest: Being optimistic for the US in this situation is the definition of wishful thinking.
Bare in mind that half of the american population voted for Trump and, this time there are no excuses: They knew very well who and what they were voting for. On top of the normalization of hatred and hate-speech, one would better not forget that all around this great country there are numerous armed groups with, to put it politely, a kinda distorted view of the reality.
Does it not sound like a recipe for disaster, especially when Mr. Trump has not yet recognized his defeat and he openly says that he will take any possible action to “defend his victory”?
The whole this becomes even worse, if we look at another reality: The new president of the US is a man of old age and weak health. A fragile president is the last thing the US needs for navigating itself safely throughout the political and societal storm that has already started with the confluence of political polarization, social distress, health crisis and unprecedented economic conditions — the definition of sailing in uncharted waters.
Yes, the US and all of the World has just avoided a catastrophe, having Donald Trump marginally defeated. But, let’s have no illusions, the road ahead is extremely tough and full of challenges. What is needed is a deep political reform which will offer a healthy mix of liberty and equality — what I consider the 21st century’s most significant challenge.
